Odour and FOG Control

BYO-GON PX-109® is NOT a bacteria, nor an enzyme. It is an alkaloid, Xeronine, that was developed and patented by the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii.  This first published article on this alkaloid was published by; Heinicke, R., "Xeronine, A New Alkaloid, Useful in Medical, Food and Industrial Fields", Hawaii Medical Journal, The Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii, Vol. 36, 1997.

BYO-GON PX-109® has proven time and time again to effectively work in wastewater treatment facilities in every market in which it has been tried. Using this product actually speeds up the treatment process and can do the following, based on application rates and points of injection:

•Lower BOD, TSS
•Reduce oil, grease, and sludge
•Eliminate odours
•Reduce sludge volume in the treatment facilities and lagoons

The alkaloid Xeronine is a cell growth accelerator that acts as a precursor to enzymatic activity at the cellular level.  At the cellular level, enzymes govern the rates and types of biologic reactions that take place.  Enzymes require specific environmental conditions for them to function. If these are not met, specific reactions do not take place and biological processes slow down. At the cellular level Xeronine acts as an "on-switch", restarting enzymatic processes and promoting more rapid cell growth, overcoming limiting environmental conditions.

The use of Xeronine has been proven to cause a shift from anaerobic fermentation to anaerobic respiration with more rapid growth and activity of facultative anaerobes ( l ).  Facultative bacteria are chemotrophs and can generate their own energy by either fermentation or by respiration.  Xeronine also increases the activity of anaerobic and aerobic organisms, resulting in a broad spectrum of more active microorganisms.

The degradation of soluble and suspended organic matter in a wastewater treatment plant is dependent on maintaining environmental conditions that maximize biological activity.  The fact that final discharge waters still contain measurable BOD, TSS, NH3 and other organic compounds, as well as secondary solids (sludge), indicates this decomposition process did not go to completion.  Something in the "environment" limited complete breakdown of this organic matter. Xeronine overcomes these limitations and pushes the naturally occurring biomass to more completely decompose this material.

For example, secondary solids from a highly aerobic basin settle in a static settling basin. In this settling basin, aerobic organisms consume all available oxygen; these become inactive and anaerobic organisms then predominate. The breakdown of sulfur and nitrogen compounds then is limited to the generation of sulfide and ammonia, by-products of anaerobic fermentation which are then released as noxious odors.

With the use of Xeronine, facultative anaerobes in the overlying waters and in the sludge show accelerated cell growth along with the shift to anaerobic respiration. In this more active settling, facultative organisms satisfy their oxygen requirement from chemically bound oxygen while consuming ammonia as a nutrient source and sulfide as an energy source.

This leads to a more complete breakdown of ammonia and nitrogenous compounds and eliminates odors off the basin, as well as measurable decreases in dissolved oxygen levels which leads to increased activity of aerobic organisms. Increased activity of all types of organisms throughout the waste stream promotes increased consumption of food (BOD), more complete breakdown of total nitrogen, increased stability of the plant to process or treatment upsets and a lowering of all effluent values.

BYO-GON PX-109® requires no special handling or equipment. It is non-toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive and 100% organic material which is 100% biodegradable.
